Tara Hopton

Tara founded Crowd Matters having spent18 years’ with the special events team at the Department of Premier and Cabinet in Sydney.


Tara has extensive experience in multi-agency liaison, specialising in crowd safety management. She has led event delivery, operations, risk management and government coordination on a wide variety of high profile major events and mass gatherings. A snapshot includes Australia Day celebrations, Sydney’s New Year’s Eve, Vivid Sydney, AFC Asian Cup 2015, ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, Sydney Harbour Bridge 75th Birthday, Sydney 2000 Olympics, Commonwealth Day, street parades and state funerals to name but a few.

She has presented at a number of crowd safety related courses and conferences in Australia. Recently she presented at the Security and Safety and Public Events and Venues conference in Sydney on how “Crowds Can Make or Break Your Event”.

Tara has studied under the world’s leading professors on crowd management since 2005 and is qualified in Crowd and Safety Management (2009, UK) and Crowd Science and Risk Analysis (2015, UK). She believes in continual learning to keep crowds safe by staying abreast of current threats and trends in an ever-changing world.
